Writer admits marijuana possession

OSAKA (Kyodo) Prizewinning writer Ramo Nakajima pleaded guilty Monday to possessing marijuana at his home in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecure.

"There is no disputing the facts," Nakajima told the Osaka District Court.

Nakajima, 51, frequently writes about his experience of being an alcoholic as well as other drug-related topics. He has authored a number of novels, essays and plays, and won the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers for "Konya subete no bar de" ("Tonight, in Every Bar").

Narcotics agents of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry raided his home Feb. 4 and found 6.5 grams of marijuana.

Prosecutors demanded a 10-month prison term, saying Nakajima is a likely repeat offender. They said Nakajima, whose real first name is Yushi, was trying to encourage drug use.

Nakajima's lawyers called for a suspended term as their client has expressed remorse.
